Cristo Rey Dental Center

On December 19th, we held a ribbon-cutting for the new Cristo Rey Dental Center and Cristo Rey Family Health Center (CRFHC) expansion. Surrounded by our supporters, CCIEC CEO Joe Garcia, Kim Garland of the Delta Dental Foundation, Christina Campbell of U of M Health-Sparrow, Dr. Howard Hamerink of the U of M School of Dentistry, Victoria Schmitz from the Office of Senator Sam Singh, and Nick Gewirtz from the Office of Senator Sarah Anthony spoke on the importance of this program in our community. Bishop Earl Boyea and Fr. Vincent Richardson also blessed the spaces. Thank you to the Delta Dental Foundation, University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry for making our new facility possible!

The Cristo Rey Dental Center will provide vital dental care to underserved populations – low-income children, people with disabilities, and veterans. Through the U of M Dental Residency Program, third and fourth-year residents of the dental school provide the dental care, switching between the roles of dental hygienist and dentist. The students are overseen by dental supervisors, local dentists who volunteer their time to help patients receive the care they need. The facility has four open-concept patient chairs with two patient rooms on either side – one designed for patients with disabilities and one for the U of M School of Dentistry’s Victor for Veterans program. CCIEC CEO Joe Garcia was recently featured on “6 In the City” to discuss our new and expanded programming, including our new Dental Clinic! Thank you to WLNS and Delta Dental of Michigan for this opportunity!

Construction has begun! On July 22nd, we officially started building our new health care facilities that will provide quality health care services to our neighbors in need.

Progress on the walls has been made!

CareQuest reports that out of households where an individual has a disability, 32.6% had not received dental care in 2 or more years, in comparison to 19.7% of households where no individual has a disability.

Through our new Dental Clinic, we’re helping to bridge this gap.

Did you know that veterans experience tooth decay at a 60% higher rate compared to nonveterans (CareQuest)?

Our Dental Clinic will help local veterans receive the dental care they need.

CareQuest reports that 93% of low-income individuals have untreated dental concerns, compared to 58% of high-income individuals.

CCIEC’s Dental Clinic will focus on serving community members who would otherwise go without the dental care they need.

MDHHS reports that more than 2.6 million Michiganders are enrolled in Medicaid.

The expansion of our Cristo Rey Family Health Center will serve those in need of affordable, quality health care in our community, including Medicaid recipients.

According to CareQuest, more than 56 million Americans have a shortage of dental professionals where they live.

Our dental practice will expand access to dental care for community members in need.
